For a first journey around Seoul, focus on three things: a payment method that works, the correct train direction and the exit nearest your destination. You do not need to memorise the network. A saved route and a few habits make it much easier to use buses and the subway with confidence.

1. Choose a transport card for the journeys you will take

T-money is a rechargeable transport card used on supported subways and buses, with other participating payment uses. Visit Seoul lists purchase locations including convenience stores and subway vending machines in its transport card guide. Ask for a T-money card and check the price and loaded balance before leaving the shop or machine.

Do not assume every card or pass has the same coverage. An unlimited city pass can have excluded lines, buses or areas. Compare your actual airport journey and planned day trips with the product's current conditions before buying. This guide uses ordinary rechargeable T-money as its starting point, rather than assuming a sightseeing pass fits every visitor.

Keep enough balance for your next journey and top up before it becomes urgent. Look for a transport-card charging machine or ask at a participating convenience store. Keep some won available and check the payment methods accepted at that particular top-up point. Buying a card and adding travel balance are separate steps, so check both. VISITKOREA's transportation card comparison is a useful reference when checking the available products.

2. Save the route, direction and exit

Before entering the station, write down your destination station, line changes and final exit number. Station names, line colours and station numbers help you compare the route with signs. Seoul's official subway instructions explain the colour-coded signs and internal transfer routes.

A line colour alone does not tell you which direction to take. Check the platform's next stations against your route, then check the train's destination display before boarding. If the route planner offers several choices, compare walking and transfers as well as its estimated arrival time.

Save a screenshot for the final walk too. A large station can have exits on different streets. If you need an elevator or step-free access, confirm the appropriate route with station information rather than assuming the closest exit has one.

3. Tap in, follow transfer signs, tap out

At the subway gate, present your transport card to the reader and wait for acceptance before walking through. Keep other contactless cards away from the reader so you present the card you intend to use. At your destination, use the same card to exit.

For a line change, follow the transfer signs inside the station. Avoid heading for an exit just because it appears closer on a street map. Some connections have their own gates or extra charges, so follow the route instructions and signs rather than assuming every transfer works identically. The Korea Tourism Organization explains the basic process in its subway guide.

If a gate rejects your card, pause and ask station staff for help. Check the displayed balance or message instead of repeatedly trying different gates. The same applies if you accidentally travel in the wrong direction: confirm your next step before exiting and paying again.

4. On buses, remember the tap when you leave

Check the bus number, direction and stop name against your saved route. On ordinary city buses, board through the front door and tap the reader. Press the stop button before your stop, then tap again when getting off through the rear door. Seoul's public transport guide describes boarding and alighting.

For eligible bus and subway transfers, keep using the same card and make the next connection within the applicable transfer period. Seoul currently describes a normal 30-minute window, extended to 60 minutes from 21:00 to 07:00. Distance and service rules can still produce an additional charge. The city's fare and transfer guide explains the conditions.

Do not treat every new journey as a free transfer. In particular, another bus with the same route number may not qualify. Have your card ready before boarding; the current Visit Seoul guide advises using a transport card on Seoul's cash-free buses.

5. Keep a simple fallback

For an occasional subway trip, single-journey cards are available from station ticket machines. Select your destination and follow the machine's instructions. The card deposit can be reclaimed at a deposit-refund machine after the journey. Use Visit Seoul's illustrated subway guide for the basic sequence; check the machine for the current fare.

Check your last connection rather than relying on a general closing time. If your journey begins at Incheon Airport, read our airport arrival guide, because AREX Express and an ordinary subway journey use different ticket arrangements. For phone, payment and arrival preparation, see the first-trip essentials checklist.
